To study in Turkey for a full degree, most international students need two things: a student (education) visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate in their home country, and then a student residence permit (ikamet) once they arrive. Students from visa-exempt countries, such as Iran, can usually enter without a visa and apply for the residence permit inside Turkey. This guide explains the steps, the usual documents and the rules for Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Iran in 2026.
Important: visa rules and document lists change often, and each embassy publishes its own checklist. Always confirm the current requirements on the official website of the Turkish embassy or consulate in your country before you apply. No agency, university or visa centre can guarantee a visa. The final decision belongs to the Turkish authorities.
Student visa or residence permit: what is the difference?
- Student visa (education visa): you get it before you travel, from a Turkish embassy or consulate (often through an authorised visa application centre). It allows you to enter Turkey for study. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that visas for purposes such as work and study are given by Turkish embassies or consulates, and that the e-Visa is only valid for tourism or commerce. So you cannot use an e-Visa to come and study.
- Student residence permit (öğrenci ikamet izni): you apply for it after you arrive, through the e-İkamet system of the Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi). It allows you to live in Turkey for the length of your studies. Foreigners who stay longer than their visa, their visa-free period or 90 days need a residence permit.
If your country is on Turkey’s visa-free list for your passport type, you may not need a student visa to enter. You still need the student residence permit, and you must apply before your visa-free period ends.
A note on North Cyprus: if you plan to study in North Cyprus, the visa and residence rules are set by the TRNC authorities, not by Turkey. Check with your university in North Cyprus for its own process.
Step-by-step: from acceptance letter to residence permit
- Get your acceptance letter. Apply to a Turkish university and receive an official acceptance (admission) letter. Several embassy checklists now ask for an acceptance letter that shows the university’s YÖK or YÖKSİS ID. You can compare options with our program search and our guide on how to apply to Turkish universities.
- Pay the tuition deposit if your embassy asks for proof. Some checklists, for example in Nigeria, ask for a tuition payment receipt. Read the refund policy before you pay.
- Fill in the online pre-application form. Most Turkish missions ask you to complete the visa pre-application form online on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular system (e-Konsolosluk, at konsolosluk.gov.tr), then print and sign it.
- Book or visit the visa application centre. In many countries the embassy does not take applications directly. It uses one authorised visa application centre (in some countries this is VFS Global; in Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh it is a different company, see below). Do not pay unofficial “appointment sellers”.
- Submit your documents and biometrics. You usually give fingerprints and a photo at the centre and pay the visa fee and the centre’s service fee. These fees are normally non-refundable, even if the visa is refused.
- Interview (if requested). In Pakistan, applicants aged 18 and over fill in an interview form by hand at submission. Other embassies may also ask for an interview.
- Wait for the decision. Visa decisions are made by the Turkish authorities, not by the visa centre. The centre cannot speed up your file.
- Travel to Turkey and register at your university. Finish your enrolment and get your student certificate (öğrenci belgesi).
- Apply for your student residence permit. Create your application on e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, pay the residence permit card fee, and submit your documents. Many universities collect the documents through their international student office.
- Register your address and receive your card. After approval, the card is sent by post (PTT). Keep your application document while you wait.
Common documents for a Turkey student visa
Every embassy has its own list, so treat this as a general picture. Items that appear on most official lists:
- A valid passport (many missions ask for at least 6 months of validity; the visa centre in Nigeria says 8 months from entry), with blank pages, plus copies of the data page and old visas
- The signed online visa application form
- Recent biometric photos on a white background (the size differs by embassy)
- University acceptance letter, often with the YÖK/YÖKSİS ID
- Proof of tuition payment, where requested
- Previous diplomas, transcripts and school certificates (sometimes attested by your Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
- Proof of funds: bank statements (often the last 3 or 6 months), plus a sponsor letter or affidavit if your parents pay
- Travel health insurance (some centres require you to buy it from them)
- Flight and accommodation reservations (reservations, not paid tickets)
- For applicants under 18: notarised parental consent and a birth certificate
Some countries add their own items, such as a criminal record certificate, a polio or yellow fever vaccination card, tax documents or a family registration certificate. Plan your budget as well: our guide to the cost of studying in Turkey helps you prepare realistic proof of funds.
Processing time
There is no single official processing time. The Turkish Consulate General in Karachi states that the timeframe “cannot be guaranteed”, because the Ministry of Interior is the main authority that grants visas. The authorised centre in Pakistan says processing usually takes at least about six weeks and that, since 2025, study visa files are processed in Ankara with no fixed timeline. The authorised centre in Nigeria says decisions are generally made within 7 to 30 business days, with special cases taking longer.
Our advice: apply as soon as you have your acceptance letter, and do not buy non-refundable flights until your passport is returned with the visa.

Turkey study visa for Pakistani students
Pakistani ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Turkey. Turkish visa applications in Pakistan are submitted through Anatolia Travel Services, the authorised visa centre, with offices in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Hyderabad. The embassy’s notice says you should not book a date through the online system yourself; follow the centre’s instructions instead. From 3 September 2026, the centre says study visa applicants in Islamabad and Peshawar must complete an online form first and book by email.
The Karachi Consulate General’s checklist (dated 20.10.2025) for a student visa includes: passport valid for at least 6 months with two empty pages, biometric photo (50 x 60 mm), cover letter, parents’ employment letter and 3 months of salary slips, admission confirmation with YÖKSİS ID, last school certificate and marksheets, parents’ sponsorship affidavit or NOC with CNIC copy, flight and hotel reservations, account maintenance certificate, bank statements for the last 6 months, previous passports and visas, FRC or MRC, and NTN/FBR documents. A bona fide enrolment letter is also required.
Nigeria
Nigerian ordinary passport holders need a visa. Since 5 January 2026, the Turkish Embassy in Abuja accepts applications only through Sefa Visa in Abuja (Churchgate Tower, Central Business District). The embassy said applications would not be accepted from the Lagos branch until further notice, so check the embassy website for updates. The Sefa Visa student checklist includes an acceptance letter with YÖK ID, a tuition payment receipt, a 6-month bank statement issued no more than 10 days before you apply, your WAEC/NECO/NABTEB result, diplomas, a birth certificate and a criminal record certificate. Travel health insurance is arranged by the centre.
Bangladesh
Bangladeshi ordinary passport holders need a visa. Since 1 February 2026, the Turkish Embassy in Dhaka accepts visa applications only through Mosaic Visa in Banani, Dhaka. The embassy’s earlier education visa note also listed an attested diploma, a medical certificate including an HIV test, travel insurance and bank statements. Ask Mosaic Visa or the embassy for the current student list before you apply. The centre says only bank statements of the applicant, the applicant’s parents or spouse are accepted.
A note for Iranian students
According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iranian ordinary passport holders are exempt from a visa for travels of up to 90 days. In practice, this means most Iranian university students enter Turkey without a visa and then apply for the student residence permit inside Turkey, before the visa-free period ends. Universities such as Istanbul Technical University note that new applications must be made within the legal stay period, for example within 3 months for visa-exempt entry.
Remember that visa-free entry does not replace the residence permit: if you study in Turkey, you need a student ikamet. Confirm current rules with your university and a Turkish mission in Iran before you travel. If you are preparing for a Turkish-taught program, see our guide to the Ankara University TÖMER exam.
The student residence permit (ikamet) after arrival
The residence permit is handled by the Presidency of Migration Management through e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. Key points from the official e-İkamet guidance:
- Timing: apply before your visa or visa-free period ends. Do not wait until the last days. Many universities set their own shorter deadlines (for example, submitting documents within 7 days of creating the online form), so follow your university’s instructions.
- Documents: the signed application form, a passport copy (bring the original), biometric photos, your student certificate, proof of address (dormitory letter or notarised rental contract), proof of fee payment, and documents for applicants under 18.
- Health insurance: mandatory, and it must cover the whole permit period. Students who apply within three months of the start of the academic year may be eligible for general health insurance (GSS).
- Foreign documents: they need an apostille (or embassy legalisation) and a notarised Turkish translation.
- Appointments are free on the official website. Do not pay anyone for an appointment.
- After approval: register your address within 20 business days. If you move to a university in another province, apply for a new permit within 10 days.

Common reasons for a student visa refusal
Common problems include:
- Incomplete documents. The Turkish Embassy in Abuja warns that incomplete applications will not be considered and you must book again.
- Weak or unclear proof of funds, such as sudden large deposits, statements from people who are not accepted as sponsors, or old statements.
- Problems with the acceptance letter, for example a letter without the university’s YÖK ID or details that do not match your other documents.
- Inconsistent information between your form, interview answers and documents.
- False or altered documents. These can lead to refusal and future problems with Turkish visas.
- Applying too late, so your file is not decided before classes start.
If you are refused, you can usually apply again. Fix the problem first and add clear supporting documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can I study in Turkey with an e-Visa or a tourist visa?
No. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the e-Visa is only valid for tourism or commerce, and study visas are issued by Turkish embassies or consulates. If your nationality is visa-exempt, you can enter without a visa, but you must apply for a student residence permit.
What are the main Turkey student visa requirements?
Usually a valid passport, the signed application form, photos, an acceptance letter (often with YÖK ID), diplomas, proof of funds, travel health insurance and travel reservations. Always use your embassy’s latest checklist.
How long does a Turkey student visa take?
There is no fixed official time. Estimates from the authorised centres range from a few weeks to six weeks or more. Apply as early as possible.
When must I apply for my residence permit after arriving?
Before your visa or visa-free period ends, and as early as you can after you get your student certificate. Your university may set an earlier internal deadline, so follow its instructions.
Do Iranian students need a student visa for Turkey?
Iranian ordinary passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 90 days, so most enter without a visa and apply for a student residence permit in Turkey. Confirm the current rules with the Turkish consulate before you travel.
Can Lord Agency guarantee my visa?
No one can guarantee a Turkish visa. We help you prepare a complete, consistent application, but the decision is made by the Turkish authorities.
