What is the Ankara University TÖMER exam?

TÖMER is the Turkish language teaching and testing center of Ankara University, one of Turkey’s oldest and best-known state universities. Its Turkish proficiency exam measures your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, and the certificate shows your level on a scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (advanced).

Most universities in Turkey accept the Ankara University TÖMER certificate as proof of Turkish language level for international applicants.

Who needs a TÖMER certificate?

  • Students applying to Turkish-taught programs. Many bachelor’s and master’s programs taught in Turkish ask for a minimum Turkish level before you can start your degree. Most ask for an advanced level, usually C1.
  • Students finishing a Turkish preparatory year who want an official certificate of their level.
  • Anyone who needs proof of Turkish for work, scholarship or residence applications.

If you plan to study in English, you usually do not need a Turkish certificate. Check the language of your program on our program search, or ask an advisor.

How exam day works
