In the Near East vs EMU vs CIU question, there is no single winner. Near East University (NEU) is the choice for health sciences and its own hospitals in Nicosia, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) stands out for internationally accredited programs in the coastal city of Famagusta, and Cyprus International University (CIU) offers a wide range of English-taught programs and a published scholarship for all international undergraduates. All three are among the best-known universities in North Cyprus and are recognized by both YÖDAK and YÖK.

Founding and background
Near East University was founded in Nicosia in 1988. It is a private university and one of the largest in North Cyprus. According to the university, it has 19 faculties, 8 institutes, 4 vocational schools and 28 research centres, and its students come from more than 130 countries.
Eastern Mediterranean University is the oldest of the three. It started in 1979 as the Institute of Higher Technology, with three engineering programs, and became a university in 1986. Unlike NEU and CIU, EMU is a state university of North Cyprus. Its official pages list 13 faculties, although some sources give a lower number.
Cyprus International University is the youngest. It opened in 1997 with 81 students and 45 staff. Today it has about 14,000 students and, according to the university, 12 faculties, several schools and an Institute of Graduate Studies and Research.
Recognition: read this first
All three universities are authorized by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of North Cyprus, and recognized by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education in Turkey. This means their degrees are accepted in Turkey.
However, North Cyprus is recognized as a state only by Turkey. Recognition of your degree in other countries depends on each country’s own rules, and it can be different for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law and engineering. Before you enroll, ask your ministry of education or degree-recognition office about the exact university and program, and try to get the answer in writing. Our guide on Turkey vs North Cyprus explains this in more detail.
Campus and location
NEU: a large campus outside central Nicosia
NEU’s main campus is on Near East Boulevard, a few kilometres outside central Nicosia, the capital. It has dormitories, a large library, an Olympic indoor swimming pool, a sports tower, a culture and congress centre, and museums such as the Cyprus Car Museum. The International Office helps new students with airport arrival, residence permits, health insurance and housing.
EMU: a city campus near the sea in Famagusta
EMU’s campus is inside Famagusta, a historic city on the east coast. Free university shuttle buses connect it with the city centre. On-campus and private dormitories can house about 10,000 students. Facilities include a library that opens 24 hours during exam periods, a health centre, the Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Complex and a beach club. There are more than 50 student clubs and more than 40 international student societies.
CIU: a campus on the edge of Nicosia
CIU’s campus is on the edge of Nicosia, and a free shuttle bus runs between the campus and several points in the city. On campus there is student housing, a library, a health centre, an oral and dental health clinic and a counselling centre. The CIU Arena sports centre has a heated semi-Olympic indoor pool, an indoor sports hall, a fitness centre and a climbing wall.
NEU and CIU are both in the Nicosia area, so you are close to the capital and to Ercan Airport. EMU gives you a smaller coastal city. Read our guide to studying in North Cyprus for more about life in each city.
English-taught programs
Most popular programs at all three universities are taught in English. The table uses each university’s own program lists.
| Program | NEU | EMU | CIU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine | English, 6 years | English, joint program with Marmara University | English, 6 years |
| Dentistry | English, 5 years | Partly English (30% English, 70% Turkish) | English, 5 years |
| Pharmacy | English, 5 years | English (B.Pharm.) | English (MPharm and PharmD) |
| Engineering | Software, Artificial Intelligence and others | Computer, Civil and others | Computer, Software and others |
| Architecture | English | English (B.Arch.) | English |
| Other examples | Veterinary Medicine, Nursing | Business Administration, Psychology, Tourism Management | Business Administration, Psychology |
A few points to note:
- NEU offers Veterinary Medicine in English, supported by its own animal hospital. Some NEU programs, such as the Law LLB, are taught only in Turkish.
- EMU Medicine is a joint program with Marmara University in Istanbul, and the last three years take place in Istanbul. EMU Dentistry is taught mostly in Turkish.
- CIU teaches Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and all engineering programs in English. Its Turkish Law program and several teacher-education programs are in Turkish, but a separate Law (English) program is also offered.
All three run an English preparatory school for students who do not yet meet the English requirement. Check the language and length of your exact program in our program search.
Hospitals and labs
For health students, NEU has the most clinical facilities on its own site: Near East University Hospital, a dentistry hospital and an animal hospital. EMU’s medical students complete the last three years of their joint program in Istanbul. CIU has an oral and dental health clinic on campus; the CIU pages we checked do not name the hospitals used for Medicine, so ask about clinical training before you apply. Our guide to studying medicine in English compares more health options.
Near East vs EMU vs CIU: accreditations and rankings
Accreditations belong to single programs, not to whole universities.
- EMU says that 55 of its programs hold accreditation from international bodies, such as ABET for engineering (including Computer and Civil Engineering), NAAB for architecture and ACPE for pharmacy.
- CIU lists MÜDEK accreditation for Computer, Civil, Electrical-Electronics and Industrial Engineering, and FIBAA accreditation for Business Administration and other business programs.
- NEU has announced ACPE certification for its pharmacy program (first granted in 2016) and ASIIN and EUR-ACE accreditation for some engineering programs (since 2015). Ask the university to confirm the current status for your program.
In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, NEU is in the 501–550 band and EMU in the 701–800 band. CIU is in the 601–800 band of the THE World University Rankings 2026; we did not find it in the 2027 edition. Use rankings as one signal, together with your program and recognition at home.
Intakes, fees and scholarships
EMU says it accepts undergraduate applications twice a year, in fall and spring. For NEU and CIU, check spring options for your exact program, as they are not available for every program.
We do not quote fees here, because they vary by program and change every year. See the current fees in our program search. On scholarships, each university states:
- NEU: for 2025–2026, its official fee page said that up to a 50% scholarship was offered to international students in all departments except Medicine and Dentistry, with special scholarships for Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine.
- EMU: many international students study with partial tuition scholarships; full scholarships are very competitive and reviewed by a committee. Sibling discounts and sports grants are also listed.
- CIU: all international undergraduate students receive a 50% tuition scholarship, and students with strong results can apply for academic scholarships of 50% to 100%.
Scholarship rules change each year, so confirm the current offer before you pay a deposit.
Which one is right for you?
- Choose Near East University if you want health sciences, including Veterinary Medicine, with the university’s own hospitals on campus, and you like the idea of living near the capital.
- Choose Eastern Mediterranean University if internationally accredited engineering, architecture or pharmacy programs matter to you, you would enjoy a coastal city, or you need a spring start.
- Choose Cyprus International University if you want an English-taught program in Nicosia with a clear published scholarship for international undergraduates and modern sports facilities.
Whichever you prefer, check degree recognition in your home country first.
